If your static surveillance may go mobile at any time, you need to be prepared to start that car and drive. Sometimes only seconds can make the difference between loosing your subject leaving the parking lot or keeping that mobile surveillance alive. Additionally, getting your cover blown is easier than ever these days when people report or confront suspicious vehicles who sit in parking lots for hours or days.
Sometimes during surveillance, I park in such a way that I can remain in the front seat, ready to start the car, while watching my subject in my mirrors. Distance from subject and size of mirrors play a big part in how I select a surveillance vehicle.
Prior to starting a surveillance, I always try to stop by a gas station and clean my mirrors and windows inside and out. When you need to photograph or video your subject, just point the camera at the mirror and zoom in. It works quite well, but holding the camera steady is a trick. Its all give and take in the world of surveillance so you have to make good decisions while out there and you never know when that optimal parking spot wont be available so you need to be prepared for everything.
Be safe out there and always notify police dispatch of your static surveillance activities prior to starting out.
